Department of English Orientation Seminar in Sanbe
From Sunday 14th May to Tuesday 16th May, Department of English first-year students joined an eventful and enjoyable three-day orientation seminar at the National Sanbe Youth Friendship Center in Shimane Prefecture. The seminar was organized by a highly motivated team of second- and third-year students. Teachers and staff also showed their support, joining students in a variety of events.
On the first day, students, teachers, and staff enjoyed orienteering in and around the center. In groups of 10 to 12, they completed various tasks and solved a variety of clues to break a spell a wicked witch had cast on Prince John.
In the evening, students enjoyed watching and answering questions about a performance of Nemo by the Orizemi Committee and first-year tutors, Professor Miyake and Professor Shima.
The second day started early with presentations by third-year students about their half-year stay in the US or Canada. Following this, preparations for lunch began. In teams, students made camp fires, then, prepared and cooked curry over the open fires.
The day closed with what has become a long standing tradition for the department, a candle service followed by entertainment, fun, and games.
On the third and final day, first-year students were given the opportunity to ask questions to their seniors, teachers and staff about university life and study abroad programs. Needless to say, the three days in Sanbe were not only extremely fulfilling but also successful in bringing Department of English students, teachers and staff even closer together.
