Report on Classes with High School Students (2021年度高大連携公開講座)
Andrea Kitahara, Taras Alexander Sak, and John McLean

On August 3rd, we held three 90-minute classes with 30 hard-working and highly motivated Hiroshima-area high school students. We all had a great time learning--and using English--together!

In Andrea's class, students learned about--and then practiced--the various skills needed for translation, using materials such as children's stories. In Taras' class, students learned about the life of Walt Disney, the history of the popular attraction, Splash Mountain, and how it has come under intense criticism from the ongoing "Black Lives Matter" movement. In John's class, students were introduced to the world of interpreting. After practicing some interpreter memory techniques, they tried shadowing, broadcast interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting.

During the individual class sessions, we took a few photographs, which you can see on this page (with the students' permission). It was a great day and we hope to see all of the students again on our campus!
