Report on Classes with High School Students (2020年度高大連携公開講座)
(Andrea Kitahara, Taras Alexander Sak, and John McLean)

On August 3rd, we had three 90-minute classes with 32 enthusiastic and diligent Hiroshima-area high school students. They were a lovely group to teach and we all had a great time learning--and using English--together!

In Andrea's class, students were introduced to the world of interpreting: they tried shadowing, note-taking and reproduction before looking at some anime and manga and trying sight translation by memo. In Taras' class, students learned about the life of Walt Disney, the history of the popular attraction, Splash Mountain, and how it has come under intense criticism from the ongoing "Black Lives Matter" movement. In John's class, students learned about--and then practiced--the various skills needed for translation, using materials such as children's stories.

During the individual class sessions, we took a few photographs, which you can see on this page (with the students' permission). It was a wonderful day and we hope to see all of the students again on our campus!
