高大連携公開講座:「高校生のための実用英会話基礎講座」を、北原アンドレア先生、ピート・ディアンジェロ先生、とジョン・マックリーン先生が担当しました。
In the first class, Andrea introduced a part of the Interpreting stream in the English department, titled "Introduction to Translation." Students were given the basic rules and skills of translation. They were shown six examples of the same chapter title, all translated differently.
Following this the students then worked on a short translation from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." They were able to compare and discuss their work with each other in groups. At the end of this exercise the students were given multiple examples of the same translation they had worked on. This led to a lively and interesting discussion about what is a "correct" translation, why they were different and what does this show about the translation process.
The second class of the day with Pete focused on conversation skills and how to overcome the fear of making mistakes. The students used some simple exercises to make self-introductions and work in groups. They were able to interact with each other and the teacher, obviously relaxing more as the class continued.
The teacher then showed an example of what a regular 90-minute class would look like, as well as showing them an example of a textbook.
Finally, using a PowerPoint, they looked at East vs. West fashion and music, after which they talked in groups for about 10 minutes. There was a pair work activity talking about music to finish the class.
The last class of the day with John was an "Introduction to Interpreting." Students learned about what skills an interpreter needs, the activities and language practice that is necessary, and the situations where interpreters are used. In groups the students discussed what they had learnt and then did some simple interpreting exercises together.
The feedback and comments for all three classes were positive, and many said how much they had enjoyed the different styles of classes.
