My First Month at UBC, Canada

This picture was taken at Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I went there on a trip organized by the University of British Columbia (UBC). Capilano Suspension Bridge was built in 1889 and is 140m long and 70m high. 800,000 tourists visit it every year. When a lot of people stand on the bridge, it is swings from left to right. Actually, when I was crossing the bridge, it was not only really thrilling but also really beautiful and amazing. I felt like I was on a cloud. At various times around the year, the bridge is illuminated and events are held. Also, in this region of Canada, there are a lot of totem poles. They were made by North American indigenous people and are important to their family identity. Canada's rainy season lasts from November to April, so I recommend going waiting for a sunny day before visiting this region.

This picture was taken in my class at UBC. My classmates and I are giving a presentation about Canadian fashion. We interviewed people who were on campus at UBC. We were nervous at first. We thought that many people would refuse to be interviewed. However, everyone we spoke to was friendly and cooperative. They smiled and wished us good luck. Before coming to Canada, I gave many presentations in English in my classes at Yasuda, so I felt confident to do this presentation. The teacher complemented me on how well I spoke. I was glad that I could make use of what I had learned at Yasuda.

This is a photo that I took on my way home from campus. One day, I got lost on my way home. I couldn't use my phone, so I didn't know which bus to take. I had to ask many people for help. Everyone who I asked was really kind. They took me to the bus stop. When I got on the bus, I told the bus driver where I wanted to go. I had to take two buses, so when the bus arrived at the station, the driver got off and walked with me to the next bus stop. Thanks to everyone's help and kindness, I could get home safely. Their kindness made me feel warm and emotional; I cried tears of happiness.

Just over one month has passed since I arrived in Canada. I used to be really nervous and afraid of living in a foreign country. However, from the day I arrived, everyone has made me feel very welcome; especially most host family. I realize the importance of being courageous and trying to speak English every day. I also think it's important to not worry about making mistakes when speaking English. I'm enjoying every day and my English is improving more and more. I'm going to make the most of my time here in Canada.
