【The tea ceremony study session at Wafu-do (和風堂)】

I really appreciate their hospitality and kindness at Wafu-do and I was impressed by the tearoom, the path toward it in the garden.  I liked the garden scenery with seasonal trees, stones and walls.  I liked the atmosphere of rooms that make me feel relaxed and calm.  I wondered how they create them so natural, and I thought it's because Japanese mind can make them enjoy living with nature, not created by the human power.  I could realize many key elements from this visit and how important it is to live with nature while many disasters have happened recently.  It was my first experience of "Ueda Soko" style tea ceremony because I'm from Yamaguchi prefecture and I didn't know his name.  I want to study more about this kind of Japanese culture and the history of Hiroshima.  I really enjoyed this class.

I experienced a tea ceremony for the first time.  Wafudo was used for the G7 summit in 2023, I could have a valuable experience.  One of them was to know that the G7 guests were welcomed in the samurai style hospitality by only men, not women. It surprised me a lot!  I was also glad about the explanation of the garden setting whose scenery has different features depending on each season.  In winter now, pine leaves are laid under trees to cover the moss and let the hosts know enemies' attack.  It was so beautiful that I would like to see the scenery in autumn.  I really want to learn more about Japanese cultures from now on, too.

I was able to learn many things at Wafu-do such as the inside story about being the destination of G7 summit partners.  I learned how to eat a Japanese sweet and drink matcha tea in the Samurai way: We cannot cut it because Samurai should not cut it in a tearoom but wrap it in a washi paper (Kaishi) to eat covering a mouth.  I really enjoyed the garden atmospheric and meanings.  I was so happy to have this kind of session and to learn a traditional and valuable place filled with the history.

I learned the depth of the tea ceremony.  There are many etiquettes and manners with meanings such as how to take a bowl up, sip tea and return it to the host.  Now I understand the more and more I learn, the more I can see the depth of Japanese culture and tradition.  I was very happy to have had a valuable experience and was inspired to learn more about Japanese culture before I go to Hawaii.  I will take a responsible role to spread Japan culture at University of Hawaii at Manoa.  I cannot wait for HIBISCUS study abroad!
