ハワイ留学中の学生たちが、ハワイのホテル産業などを学ぶ授業の一環として「Trade Show」の見学を行いました。「Trade Show」とは、企業が新しい商品や製品、提供するサービスなどを展示したり、デモンストレーションしてみせたりするために開催される展示会です。学生から、その様子や感想のレポートが届きましたのでご紹介いたします。

Hawaii, Hotel & Restaurant Trade Show

3年1組　E.K

　

It's been a month since we arrived in Hawaii. Classes have started in earnest. There's a class called Tourism and Culture. In this class, I'm learning about hotels, companies, public transport and so on.

In this class I went to an exhibition called "Trade Show", there were a lot of companies there. We could talk to the people from the companies. I asked them what they are do, what kind of people they target. There are a lot of companies that are famous in Japan as well as companies that are unique to Hawaii, and I learned a lot. The company I remember the most is called "Sustainable Island Products". This company makes environmentally friendly products out of wood. This company sells a variety of environmentally friendly products. For example, they sell coffee cups, straws, cooking utensils, pizza boxes, and so on. They supply these products to other companies. In Japan, plastic straws have been replaced by paper straws, but in Hawaii, there are still a lot of plastic straws. I also thought that we should consider the environment and use sustainable products like this in Hawaii. This trade show not only gave me the opportunity to learn about the company, but also to think about a lot of things. And I wanted to combine with this experience with the job search. At this University of Hawaii, there are many things that you cannot experience in Japan, so I want to spend the remaining three months cherishing each and every one of them. As well as talking to lots of people and improving my English skills, I hope to learn more about Hawaiian culture and traditions.

　

ハワイに来てから一か月がたちました。ハワイ大学の授業も本格的に始まりました。ハワイ大学の授業では、Tourism and Cultureという授業があります。私たちはこの授業でホテルや企業、公共交通機関などについて学んでいます。

この授業の一環でTRADE SHOWというイベントに参加しました。様々な企業の方とお話しすることが出来ました。日本でも有名な企業やハワイならではの企業も参加されていましたが、私が一番心に残ったのはsustainable island productsという会社です。この会社はコーヒーのカップやストロー、料理器具やピザの箱などの商品を木などの環境にやさしい材料で作っています。その製品をほかの会社へ提供しています。日本ではプラスチックストローから紙ストローへ変わっている企業も多くなってきましたが、ハワイではまだまだプラスチックストローを使っている企業が多いように感じます。ハワイでも環境のことを考えた製品を使っていくべきだと思います。今回のイベントでは企業について知ることだけでなく、たくさんのことを考える良いきっかけとなりました。この貴重な体験を就職活動につなげていきたいと思います。また、ハワイでは日本では体験することのできないことがたくさんあるので、ひとつひとつの体験を大事にして、残りの３か月を過ごしていきたいと思います。そして、たくさんの人と会話をして英語力を伸ばしていくことに加え、ハワイの文化や伝統などについても学んでいけたらいいなと思います。
