I will talk about Japan Culture Day event we recently held. The purpose of this event is to convey Japanese culture to many people living in Hawaii.
Our group decided to introduce Origami and have a hands-on Origami experience. Every Friday leading up to Japanese Culture Day, we had made discussion about how to make this event fun and what kind of origami would be the most Japanese. This time, we decided to show how to fold cranes, shuriken and Mt.Fuji. We each practiced at home so that all members could teach.
Many people came to our event on that day. It was difficult to fold origami while explaining in English, but most of the participants were very kind and willing to listen to our slow English explanations. I'm relieved that they understood and enjoyed the origami experience. Also, I was surprised to see that many people have folded cranes before. It was fun to talk about Japan while folding origami together.
It was very rewarding to see their happy faces and to hear them say "thank you". My one regret was that I should have prepared child-friendly origami. However, the children took an interest in the shuriken, and when I gave it to them, they happily returned home.
Through this Japanese culture day, I learned that it is difficult to convey Japanese culture, but if you smile and talk positively, the other person will enjoy it. I would be happy if this event could help people learn a little bit more about Japan and get them interested in Japanese culture.
