ハワイ・沖縄フェスティバルでのボランティア

Service Learning

At the University of Hawaii, there is a class called Service Learning. 100 and 200 level classes do volunteer work. This photo is from my first volunteering at the Okinawa Festival. We students performed tasks such as putting wristbands on customers, opening doors, and handing out pamphlets. I was in charge of putting wristbands on customers. First, I received an explanation from the person who runs the Okinawa Festival, but at first, I had a hard time understanding the explanation in English, but when I asked questions about things I didn't understand, they kindly explained things to me and helped me improve my volunteer skills. I was able to do it. When putting on the wristbands, customers sometimes asked where they should go or how to enter the venue. I believe that when we responded, we were able to communicate well in English and provide assistance. It was my first time interacting with many people outside of university, so I was very nervous. After showing them around, most of the people said: "thank you." and I felt that people in Hawaii were very kind. I also enjoyed many things volunteering, such as having daily conversations with them. Through volunteering, I was able to have conversations with many local people, and I was able to practice speaking English, which was a great experience for me. I would like to value my volunteer experience.
