I had a wonderful experience on Friday 5/27/2016 listening to President Obama's speech in Peace Park and typing it out in English to help the translators who were working with the Japanese news agencies. I did a telephone with BBC (UK) and had discussions with Hiroshima's TSS reporters about Obama's speech. There were many talented translators working hard to write the speech in Japanese, but it was a very difficult speech to translate clearly because it was very poetic and vague.
We had interesting discussions about what the true meaning of his words, and how best to express that in Japanese. It was a really interesting and rewarding experience for me. I am glad that Obama was able to visit Hiroshima
and give such a beautiful, thoughtful speech to the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki about the nuclear bombing. Obama's hope is for a future without nuclear weapons, I think this reflects the hopes of many people in Japan and around the world.
