【自己紹介】

Hello everyone, I am pleased to meet you all here.

I am returning to teaching in Japan, after first coming here in 1994 as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. In the interim, I have worked in academia, teaching social sciences to graduate students and academic English to foreign and immigrant students. I have also worked in international affairs for the U.S. State Department in Seoul, Tokyo, Washington and New York, primarily in educational and cultural affairs. I also founded an international education consulting business, which brought international students from Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan to the United States for university-based, short-term educational and cultural exchange programs.

My research considers the intersection of education and culture in the internationalization of higher education, focusing on the motivations and objectives, or the context of cross-national educational transfer. My dissertation research (2019) investigated Qatar's experience in bringing an American model of higher education to Doha, given the contextual factors of leadership, demographic and social statistics, gender, a liberal arts education, socioeconomic and geopolitical factors.

My research and international work over the years have included stints in the Middle East, around Southeast and East Asia, throughout several cities in Western Europe and South America, and with international organizations. I was born in Saigon, raised in Washington and lived in New York City for most of my adult life. I have been a refugee, an immigrant, a diplomat, and an expatriate, among other designations. So, I would like to share some of those stories and experiences with my students.

I would be happy to meet you in person, so please come stop by my office on the third floor of Building 1 at your convenience. Thank you.
