Hawaiian Gods
Chihiro Nakamoto

I will write about Hawaiian religion, a topic we learned in class, and the god Hawaiians believe in. First I will introduce you to the concepts of animism and polytheism. Animism is the idea that there are spirits in all things other than human beings. For example, animals, the sea, mountains and the sky. Polytheism is the belief in many gods. Apart from polytheism there is also monotheism. This is the religion that recognizes only one god. Examples of modern polytheism are Hinduism and Japanese Shinto. Next I will write about the four main gods of Hawaii. The first is Kane. Kane is the highest of the four gods because he is the birth god and the creator of life. These gods are considered to be ancestors of humanity including the chief and common people. The second one is Ku. He is the god of war and destruction, and also the god of fishing and the forest. Ku destroys things, but can also create. The third one is Lono. Lono is the god of fertility, farming, rain, music and peace. It is believed that he gives life to people. The fourth one is Kanaloa. He plays the complementary role of Kane. If Kane builds a boat, then Kanaloa sails it. Kanaloa is the god of the ocean and is represented by a squid. Besides these four gods, there are also the goddesses Pele and Laka. Pele is the goddess of fire and volcanoes, and Laka is the goddess of hula dancing.
I only have three months left in Hawaii. Sometimes I felt that studying abroad is not easy, but I want to learn more about Hawaiian culture, history, tourism and business.
