Miyajima Study-Trip

2017.12.05

We had a successful study-trip to Miyajima island yesterday with 39 students from the 1st and 2nd year. The targets of the study-trip to learn about the needs of inbound tourists and improve communication skills by conducting surveys seems to have been met.
Many of the students reported that it was their first time visiting the famous island and enjoyed learning about the famous sights adorned in beautiful autumn colors. Most of the students also said they felt nervous when preparing to talk with international visitors to the island, but were relieved when so many people were very friendly and happy to talk with them.
A survey is being conducted with those who attended but the general feeling from the group was that they learned a lot and felt more confident in their communication skills at the end of the trip.

I visited Miyajima to ask questions to some foreign visitors about their trip today.
I did this field trip in a group with Luna and Risa. At first they said that they were so nervous about talking to the people and it was so cold that they were about to lose their motivation. But they asked very politely and always kept smiling. They inspired me to keep asking the questions.
We basically followed the interview sheet but I tried to also have conversations with many of the visitors. I have a thing which I was especially surprised through asking questions. I found many people stay overnight in Hiroshima better than I had thought. I had learned that tourists could go sightseeing whole Hiroshima in a day so they rarely stay in Hiroshima. However, all people who I met said they stayed in Hiroshima more than 1 day.
The couple from Canada will stay in Japan for 1 month and in Hiroshima for 3 days which was the longest. The point is that even though they visit other prefectures it is Hiroshima that they stay in. We supposed that reason why they bother to come back to Hiroshima was because it has useful transportation such as the shinkansen. Shinkansen is convenient to go to the main sightseeing spots but this convenience also means a difficulty to go to the other areas. Other people also said that they've found it complicated to use the transportations. We have to think about this problem about transportations.
I could ask questions more people in Miyajima than in Kagawa so I got some information.
