Faculty of Letters, Department of English Language and Literature
Objectives
The Department of English Language and Literature aims to foster the development of a high level of English and communicative ability to meet society's demands so that students can play an active role in a global society. It also aims to produce graduates who excel in their ability to apply their English, have a flexible mindset necessary to be able to view various situations from a global perspective, and possess a rich sense of humanity, or understanding of others.
Key Features
All Department of English Language and Literature students join our six-month study abroad program in the US in the second semester of their second year. The program has been running since 1990. In addition to developing a high level of English necessary for their future careers, this experience encourages students to not only view different cultures open-mindedly but also develop the skills required to be able to actively communicate with someone from a different culture. Additionally, we expect all Department of English Language and Literature students to take the EIKEN (Test in Practical English Proficiency) and TOEIC tests. By the time students graduate, we expect them to have passed the EIKEN Pre-1 test and obtain a TOEIC score in excess of 730. The department's curriculum and the personal support we offer students are designed to help them achieve these goals during their time at Yasuda.
