Objectives
The Department of Japanese Language and Literature in the Graduate School of Letters provides students with courses that are designed to focus on various aspects of Japanese and Japanese literature and to enable students to develop advanced knowledge and research competency required in these research areas. The courses aim to nurture students who can take the initiative to contribute to society and utilize their expertise in relevant fields
Key Features
The department offers both M.A. and Ph.D. courses. The Master's program is designed to meet the specific needs of students with varied interests in Japanese linguistics, Japanese literature (including classical Chinese literature and Japanese culture), and Japanese language education. In the Japanese linguistics course, students will obtain deep insights not only into the Japanese language but into contrastive studies between Japanese and other languages. In the Japanese literature course, students pursue their research interests through reading various literary works and historical documents. In the Japanese language education course, students acquire professional knowledge and skills required to be a qualified Japanese language teacher in secondary (junior and senior high) schools. The doctoral program is comprised of a Japanese linguistics course (including Japanese language education) and a Japanese literature course (including classical Chinese literature and Japanese culture), and is designed to serve the needs of students who wish to make academic contributions to relevant fields.
