Service Learning at Lyon Arboretum
Saki Shintani

I volunteered for Lyon Arboretum. This agency was founded to increase the appreciation of the unique flora of Hawaii. We worked with the grounds crew to maintain the trails. I weeded the trails by using a sickle. There are many bugs in the ground, and I felt the wonderfulness of nature. This day is a rainy day, so sometimes the rain became heavy. We hide under the tree, the tree protects us from rain perfectly like a roof. It was so surprising! In addition, everyone among the Lyon's staff was so kind. The man who helped us tell about the name of plants introduced rare color plants (it has blue seeds) and served us sugar cane and sour cucumber. I tried these for the first time. Sugar cane was so sweet and delicious. It has become my favorite. The sour cucumber was very sour but I like it. Also, he talked to us about many kinds of things. So we can enjoy working and it became good practice to speak English!! I had a good time doing this.
