　Grade 6 students learn about peace every year in Kusunoki class from a Japanese perspective, and about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in World War 2. In English class, we focus on the international perspective on Hiroshima, and on war and peace around the world.　

For this class, artist and peace activist, Rebecca Goldschmidt came to Yasuda elementary school to talk with the Grade 6 students. She talked about how peace is an active choice, and the values we need to create peace. Students then asked her questions about peace in English that they had prepared. Finally, we did a mini art project, where students chose one value that is important to them and created a drawing to show how they feel it connects to peace.

To close, the students thanked our guest by singing "Peace Like a River" in English while using Sign Language to sign the lyrics. Ms. Goldschmidt was deeply touched by their performance and joined in with the signing and singing.

6年生は毎年くすのきの授業で、広島への原子爆弾投下について学習しています。また、英語の授業では、広島に対する国際的な視点や、世界の戦争と平和について考えています。

今回の授業では、アーティストであり平和活動家でもあるレベッカ・ゴールドシュミットさんを安田小学校にお招きし、6年生と一緒に平和について考えました。

レベッカさんからは、「平和は一人ひとりが積極的に選び、つくっていくもの」というお話や、平和をつくるために大切な価値観についてお話しいただきました。その後、児童たちは事前に準備した平和についての質問を英語で尋ねました。

最後には、自分にとって大切な価値を一つ選び、それがどのように平和につながるのかを絵で表現しました。

授業の締めくくりには、感謝の気持ちを込めて「Peace Like a River」を英語で歌い、歌詞に合わせた手話も披露しました。レベッカさんも子どもたちの歌に深く感動され、一緒に手話をしながら歌ってくださいました。
