ハワイの「2018 HIBISCUS」参加学生から、大学生活や現地での様子についてレポートが届きました。

University of Hawaii
Haruka Ito

I'd like to explain about the University of Hawaii where we are studying this semester. The University of Hawaii was established in 1907 and is located in Honolulu. This university has the oldest history of any university in Hawaii. Students can learn about Marine Biology and Hawaiian, the art of Hawaii, tourism management and so on at UH. When I talked about the university with my host mother, I knew that there are many students who came from the country all over the world in UH. After I checked about UH on the internet, this University accepted students who have the various background to aim to become a bridge between the West and the East. When I move to next classroom with my friends and eat lunch, sometimes I heard various languages. I have never experienced thing like this. So I enjoy hearing a variety of languages for the first time at UH. And also, I think that this is a good opportunity for me to learn different culture while studying English and tourism. Communicating with many kinds of students by spending time at lunch and after school is my goal now. I think that I want to improve my cross-culture skills after I achieve this goal. And also I have a Culture day which we introduce Japanese culture next month. So, I want to be well prepared to tell people about Japanese culture.
I can also explain some differences between Japanese university and the University of Hawaii. I will introduce the facilities. UH have various facilities like a baseball stadium, Japanese garden, bookstore and so on. When I went to the stadium, I could enjoy seeing baseball game of UH students with my host family. I also discovered that we can buy snacks and clothes and shoes and so on as well as books and stationary at the bookstore. I was so surprised to know that we can buy almost anything at the UH university campus.

Features of Hawaiian Nature
Mayumi Nakamura

At first, when I thought of Hawaii, I thought it had much natural beauty everywhere. There are many trees at shopping malls and roads. Especially, there are many palm trees. So, I can see beautiful views wherever I go. The place where I was most impressed was at the Royal Hawaiian Center. I could really feel Hawaiian nature there and so I felt relaxed. I took many pictures there.
Second, I've been impressed by Hawaiian birds, especially the doves. Compared to Japanese ones, they have different body colors. Also, the tree sparrows, too. The Hawaiian tree sparrow's face is blue. That made me surprised and interested, so I want to know the reason.
Third, It's a little cold in the morning and after evening since the rainy season is in February and March. I still need a cardigan every day. But the sunlight is strong during the day. So, we need a folding umbrella, a cardigan, and sunscreen every day.

Hawaiian Sightseeing
Shiho Nakamasu

I went to Moanalua gardens with Kana and Hitomi. It's located in Moanalua which is very far from my home, so it took more than 1 hour to get there. This garden is famous for a special type of tree named the "Monkey Pod" or "Raintree". I heard that the height of the tree can be 25m.
The reason why I went to Moanalua gardens is that this place has become famous because it was in the Japanese company, Hitachi's, commercial. Do you know this phrase "Kono ki nanno ki"? I heard this phrase when I was a child. So I thought that I want to go to this place and I want to see this big tree someday. At Moanalua gardens, there are many Japanese tourists and sales people who can speak Japanese. I was very excited and relaxed because the garden has such beautiful nature, a clear sky and clean air during our visit. I want to go again and I highly recommend this place.
