Orientation Seminar – Orizemi

Creating a Basis for a Fulfilling Student Life
Deepening the Relationships among Classmates and Seniors

Orizemi is an annual event that has a longstanding tradition within Yasuda. Since 1976, in May, all first-year students from every department in both the university and college have spent three days and two nights at a youth hostel in Sanbe or Etajima, participating in group activities prepared by their seniors.

All first-year students are assigned to a group which is led by their seniors. Deep-founded bonds of friendship develop among the students in each group as they collaboratively participate in a variety of activities. These bonds then create a basis for each and every first-year student to embark on a fulfilling student life at Yasuda.

・In 2003, Yasuda’s Orizemi was selected for the following award by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology:
Support Program for Distinctive University Education

Orizemi: For the Students by the Students

Each department’s Orizemi is collaboratively planned and run by second- and/or third-year students who volunteer to be members of their department’s Orizemi committee or to lead a group of first-year students. These students start their detailed preparations six months in advance to ensure that the new first-year students’ experiences can be as fulfilling as possible. What’s more, while each department’s Orizemi share characteristics—such as group discussions touching on topics that help deepen emotional bonds, candle ceremonies, campfires, and other moving events carried out under the direction of senior students—they also have unique and distinguishing features. The Department of English’s Orizemi, for example, includes a number of events that encourage students to use of their English language skills.

Tutor System

Maximizing the Potential of Each and Every Student Supporting Students as They Embark on Every Day

Tutor SystemYasuda made the decision to make homeroom a credit bearing class to create an environment wherein students’ development of a ‘Tender yet Firm Spirit’ can be fostered and meaningful character development can be facilitated. To realize these objectives and to ensure that each and every student can maximize her potential, tutors not only provide guidance and support about, for example, how to register for courses and job hunting activities but also offer reassurance and support with any problems or concerns, no matter how small, the students may have.

LibraryIn addition to housing 280 thousand books that touch on a countless number of knowledge fields, the library boasts a collection of approximately 2,400 different research journals. In the reading corner, users can choose from a range of sizes of tables and chairs the ones they find most comfortable. They can select audiovisual materials from an extensive collection and enjoy watching them in the media resource room. They can also enjoy perusing reference books and documents in a bright, comfortable atmosphere. Alternatively, they can use the university’s Wi-Fi to access the Internet in almost every corner of the library.

Student Support Center

Supporting Each and Every Student in Her Learning

Student Support CenterYasuda’s Student Support Center was set up in 2011 with a view to supporting students’ desire to ‘learn’ and fostering their ability to do it autonomously. The center provides students with a wide variety of services. For example, Student Support Advisors are available for direct consultation about Japanese, English and mathematics. Advisors can also put students in touch with professors within the university who are willing to give guidance about other subjects. The center provides students with up-to-date information about internships, extra-curricular courses, volunteer activities, and much more. Furthermore, it acts as a test center for anyone interested in sitting the following examinations: TOEIC, The Japanese Language Qualification, The Japan Kanji Aptitude Test, and The Japanese Secretarial Qualification. Lastly, to ensure that students can safely use their laptops whenever necessary, the center provides technical support for any problems, arranging for computers to be repaired as and when required.
