Faculty of Letters, Department of Japanese Language and Literature

Objectives

The Department of Japanese Language and Literature aims to not only nurture students' ability to play an active role in society but also develop their sense of identity through the study of Japanese language and literature. Students are exposed to a wide range of opportunities to deepen their awareness of Japan's culture and history while developing their ability to think and act rationally, which is necessary in today's society.

Key Features

The department offers a range of courses in Japanese language and Japanese literature that aim to: raise students' lexical, syntactic, and stylistic competence; deepen their understanding of cultural and historical aspects presented in literary works; and build on students' existing knowledge. The department's multifaceted curriculum is underpinned by an array of purposefully designed specialist courses. Students can elect to take courses that enable them to gain qualifications or licenses necessary to become secondary school Japanese teachers, Japanese as a foreign language teachers, curators, or librarians.
