Objectives

The Department of English Language and Literature in Graduate School of Letters aims to cultivate students who can utilize intellectual creativity and logical thinking, and flexibly play a leading role in various fields in this changing global society. It provides students with three courses of study (English linguistics/philology, British/American literature, and English language education) which prepare students to conduct advanced research and deepen their interest and expertise in their respective academic fields.

Key Features

The department offers both Master's (M.A.) and Ph.D. courses. Our Master's program is designed to meet the specific needs of students with varied interests in English linguistics/philology, British/American Literature, and English language education, providing students with excellent ongoing educational support for the entire duration of their program. It also provides students with some unique classes which assist them in the further improvement of their English proficiency, especially their abilities to read academic texts and write academic papers. In addition, the program can enhance and strengthen the qualifications of those wishing to teach at secondary schools in Japan, as English language teachers. Our doctoral course is designed to serve the needs of students who wish to pursue their individual studies at the most advanced level, while encouraging and assisting them to complete their doctoral dissertations.
